The U-2 Spy Plane Incident – Photo Gallery – LIFE

The U-2 Spy Plane Incident
Back in the day, it wasn’t just Russian spies who were nabbed and swapped. In 1960, the Cold War grew downright frigid when an American spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union — and the pilot, Francis Gary Powers (pictured) was captured. The U-2 Spy Plane Incident, as it came to be known, was one of the worst black eyes the U.S. suffered during the decades-long Cold War. July 8, 2010 marked the 50th anniversary of the day Gary Powers was put on trial in Moscow on charges of spying for the United States.
