Reminder – Skulls Everywhere – Photo Gallery – LIFE

In one of the most graphic depictions of war’s brutality ever published in LIFE, the severed head of a napalmed Japanese soldier is propped up beneath the gun turret of a disabled Japanese tank. The photo, by the great LIFE photographer Ralph Morse, generated angry responses from readers, shocked and in disbelief that “good American” soldiers would ever display such depraved indifference to death and suffering, even among the enemy. The magazine’s editors responded to the outrage, writing that “war is unpleasant, cruel, and inhuman. And it is more dangerous to forget this than to be shocked by reminders.”
